The Cling are a melodic fuzzy guitar band with an opening track that starts a bit like Menswe@r, but soon changes into straight down the line indie rock in the style of Gene. There's certainly no doubting their ability and they expertly steer away from trad rock wank for the most part. Track two, A One Night Stand, is a little more generic, jolly chopping guitar line and what sounds like a saxophone in the background. This is an issue, sax belongs on a Madness b-side, but top marks for the clumsy lyric "come over here, don't be afraid, tonight we're gonna get laid". By track four we're into a weird combination of wah guitar and Simon & Garfunkel melodies, interesting if not all that impressive. Final track, Boat Song, is jumpy and rambling like a strange cross between The Coral and The Fall. The sax is back though. Another nod to the so bad their great lyrics is in order here with the chorus, "I don't want to end up alone drinking Diamond White in the neon light".
With a bit more time to nail down their sound The Cling could be one to watch. At the moment it's an interesting but confusing journey showing the signs of a band with a few too many influences at odds with each other.
