This is the first single from Sheffield ‘electro-sleaze’ rockers, Pink Grease. It’s unlikely you’ll hear a more deranged, mind-blowingly brilliant debut in the whole of 2003.
‘Working All Day’ is a delirious, incomprehensible whirlwind of fuzzy guitars and screaming vocals, played at a hundred miles an hour…it’s one of those records capable of providing the listener with an adrenaline rush that makes you want to smash the room up, throw the telly out of the window, set fire to your clothes, and thrash around like a pig on heat. It’s a gas from start to finish, and if it sounds this good on record, then lord only knows what it must be like played live.
B-side, ‘Manhattan On Fire’, is, if anything, even more extreme. Built around a heavy bass riff, with an almost avant-garde melody, it’s like being trapped in a nightmare with the New York Dolls and The Fall providing some kind of unholy but intoxicating soundtrack.
Who knows if there’s more stuff where these tracks came from? Damn it, does anyone really care? These days, you can take your pick from any number of scruffy, retro guitar bands, but on this evidence, Pink Grease are absolutely vital. If they haven’t already burnt out completely, do yourself a favour…
