There’s an extra delicate line between breathy beauty and bedwetting banality which Brooklyn-via-Texas threesome Calla are waxing their arse-cracks with right now. Taken from the album of a similar name (that’ll be ‘Televise’), ‘Televised’ is a perfect example.
The creeping darkness and schmaltz-oozing charisma of the LP is lost a little here, and where that was an experience reminiscent of The Afghan Whigs mixed with Kevin Shields, this merely smoulders like a decent Coldplay.
A live, extra-minimalistic take on ‘Don’t Hold Your Breath’ restores the requisite atmosphere – all crushing sadness and lonely, dust-filled roads – but can’t conceal the need for a full-length adventure through Calla’s undiscovered wastelands. So, like, buy the album instead.
