Sissy Wish is actually Siri Walberg, a Norweigan singer-songwriter of the Kate Bush or Tori Amos variety. She attended Paul McCartney’s own ‘School of Rock’ (LIPA, Liverpool) and has played in Norway with Travis. Sounds pretty interesting, yeah? Okay, maybe it doesn’t on paper, but that’s no reason to ignore her startlingly-brilliant debut UK single - this young singer gives you more pop and passion for your pound than the average soloist.
’The Six Feet Tall’ is a riotous pop number that sounds completely out of time, yet Siri's soaring, piercing vocals completely command the direction of the guitar/piano undertones with a grace and power that demands repeated listens. It opens with an intriguing instrumental before crashing into full-on pop mode with a tune that stays with you long after the track finishes, enough to make you want to throw away any experimental records and pledge alegiance to apparently normal songs. Obliteratingly simple it may be, but the multi-layered effect ensures it's far from a boring experience.
One question is obvious: is there really room for another songwriter who sounds a little bit like Kate Bush? Where Sissy Wish is concerned, most certainly. You may not know her (yet), but for those who want a quality distraction from the Melua/Jones** overkill and songs with a slab of substance, then Sissy is your woman.
