There is a certain something about a man in a cape that is both intriguing and alarming in one. There is something inherently attracting about grown men clubbing together to discuss and celebrate folklore and dragons and stuff. Right? Err, ok.
David ‘Dionysus’ DeFeis, vocalist, composer and keyboard player for the barbaric-romantic metal group, Virgin Steele may be stuck well and truly in the past (and possibly stuck in his suit of armour as well) but old DDD still managed to take some time out of his unbelievably busy schedule of riding horses whilst carrying massive swords to answer Some Questions for DiS. And he provided some marvellous answers.
If you could be drowned in anything, what would it be?
Wine, women and song. One must sink oneself deeply into all of that.
What are your favourite websites?
I have no idea! Burnerkitty?!
Is it such a mystery? |
If you could make one book as important and integral to Western society as the Bible, what would it be?
If I were to write one it would be about understanding, acceptance, and tolerance for our individual uniqueness and the celebration of what we actually share in common. If it is what book to elevate it would be The Jesus Mysteries (by Timothy Freke and Peter Gandy), so others can begin to learn about and question the truth concerning the origins of the World's religions and the deep debt that books such as the Bible owe to Pagan philosophy.
What's your favourite alternative porn title for a Hollywood blockbuster?
The House That Dripped Cum.
Have you had any near-death experiences?
Every morning, noon and night. I exist in a hallucinogenic state in which I easily pass through different worlds and the worlds between those worlds easily, porously and continuously.
On a scale of 1-10, how metal do you think you are?
We go to 11!
What is your favourite country?
I enjoy Greece quite a bit because I love the ancient Myths, the Ruins, the food, the atmosphere and the feeling that the Ancient Gods & Goddesses are very near to us all the time.
You spend so much time together, how do you stay friends?
It is the wine.
What band do you wish your band were as good as?
None. We are quite content with who we are.
What advice would you give someone coming to one of your gigs?
Bring earplugs and a large box of condoms.
David DeFeis enjoys many Scotches |
What's your favourite booze?
I enjoy Scotch – Johnny Walker, John Begg, all sorts of brands. It mixes nicely with sweet vermouth for a Rob Roy, which is excellent, or with amaretto for a Godfather, or straight up is great!
Who or what do you miss the most?
My peace of mind.
What's your favourite childhood memory?
One of the earliest memories I have is being in a bed in a hospital looking quite intently at a book, and then I become aware of the sensation of being wheeled down a corridor, when the motion abruptly stops and a big black mask comes down over my face and I smell ether. I was three years old and I had to have my tonsils removed, which is why I was in the hospital. Later that day I remember waking up and puking all over my sister's bed. She was also in the Hospital having her tonsils removed. Perhaps it was a 2-for-1 sale!
What was your worst haircut?
When I was 13 my sister, the same one from the above question, was studying to become a hairstylist...I went to her shop and was scalped! I did not cut my hair for many years after that.
On a scale of 1-10, how good do you look naked?
Wonderful! I go to 11!
Name three things you could not live without.
Music, Sex and Wine....
David and Virgin Steele recommend that the only bands that you out to DiScover are Type O Negative, The Cult and Mott the Hopple and that if you go to one festival in your lifetime you ought to practise the noble art of time travel and get yourselves down to Bacchanalia, the ancient festival of Dionysus held in around 200 BC. I’ve got my ticket! Dunno about camping yet though.
Virgin Steele released their latest opus, Visions Of Eden, on September 11 through Sanctuary Records.
