Takeover

Múm week: DiScover three young Reykjavik bands
Múm week: DiScover three young Reykjavik bands
sean by Sean Adams August 10th, 2009

To kick off a special week of content from the skittering electronic Icelandic folks Múm, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason suggests three new acts from their home town that you should check out.

It's all about the kids, right? So, this is an accumulation of the very young Reykjavík musicians I find interesting at the moment.

Retro Stefson

The band of today. Unclassifiable and always a joy to watch live and a joy to be around. I have known some of them since they were 8 years old and I was working in their children school. myspace.com/retrostefson

Sudden Weather Change

This band is the Best on ball 2009 (Bestir á balli) and their shows are always charged and energetic. I saw them first about 2 years ago when by chance I walked passed a gig in a small café and they were screaming without microphones because they were broken or something like that (DiS did the same thing at Iceland Airwaves last year). myspace.com/suddenweatherchange

DJ Flugvél og Geimskip

DJ Airplane and Spaceship is what this girls band name translates to. The album Rokk og Róleg lög (Rock and Easy Tunes) was released on Brak records. myspace.com/djflugveloggeimskip. Closely related is the band Skelkur í Bringu

Mum release their new album Sing Along to Songs You Don't Know on August 24th and headline the DiS stage at Summer Sundae on August 14th. Örvar also plays in one of the best new bands we've seen for a long while FM Belfast, who sound like a toxic waste drinking Hot Chip.
