Brave New Ideas Launch + Stills Album Playback (London)
Brave New Ideas Launch + Stills Album Playback (London)
sean by Sean Adams January 29th, 2004
"Thursday is the new Friday!" ...Drowned in Sound and 93 Live have announced plans for a monthly night at 93 Feet East (East London) and Bi-Annual Compilations.

Brave New Ideas is a Drowned in Sound and 93 Live co-run, monthly series of nights in the capital at 93 Ft East (Brick Lane, E1), on the first Thursday of every month. drownedinsound.com and 93 Live have joined creative forces to celebrate and champion the most exciting and inspiring new music around just now. The first features M.CRAFT, THE NEEDLES and KARMAKOPS all live in the main hall.

These nights will feature acts from the ‘Brave New Ideas’ compilations, set for release on Drowned in Sound Recordings, bi-annually in April and October, featuring many acts who have appeared and hung out at the nights, as well as featuring heavily on DrownedinSound.com. The first release includes exclusive tracks and gems stirring up the flow beneath the mainstream. Tracklisting will be announced very soon.

Before the bands, we’re kicking off the evening by previewing one of the most eagerly anticipated debut records in years, The Stills ‘Logic Will Break Your Heart’, which is released on 679 Recordings, February 23rd. Promotional goodies for the record will be given away to fans whilst it’s playing. It starts in the Bar at 7pm and runs 'til 8pm when The Needles take the stage, so make sure you come along early...

Playing live, we have...

KARMAKOPS
A three-piece Manchester-based band who played their first gig in September 2003, supporting Stereophonics two months later in front of 4,000 people. Best described as a winning mix of The Who, AC/DC, and Electric Six. Get ready for some ska-like stomps, sprawling melodies, and vicious guitar barrages. Plus they’ve already been written about in The Sun!? Find out a little more about them in this interview.

M.CRAFT
www.musicforears.com
Martin Craft is one of DiS’ big tips for 2004. His eclectica/folktronica group have just signed to 679 Recordings (The Stills, Streets) and the mini-album ‘I Can See All Tonight’ has had this written about it:
"...charts the unexplored territory between Sergio Mendez and DJ Shadow. Tantalising stuff." - Uncut
"We're talking major new talent. You should hear this." - Independent on Sunday ****1/2
"One of the most exciting talents to emerge for a hot minute...unsettled and original." - iD
"Holds more sweet melody than most LP's twice its size" - Dazed & Confused
"24 minutes of subtle beauty...Highly recommended." - Independent ****
"M.Craft's minimalism leaves you wanting another dose." - Jockey Slut

THE NEEDLES
the-needles.com
Back in September the NME tipped The Needles alongside Franz Ferdinand and Dogs Die in Hot Cars when all eyes were on Glasgow, hopefully you can see where this is going… They’re actually from Aberdeen, they’ve had daytime Radio1 play and have completely sold out their first 5-Eps. They also have a new EP out in March on Dangerous Records (a la Muse!).
"…bespectacled frontman Dave Addison looks like a wired crack-gobbling goblin version of Buddy Holly from hell… fantastic fire-breathing, souped-up, fuzzed-out rock'n'roll!" Play Louder
