Cadence Weapon records track for new SMD album, targets Leonard Cohen, Sartre for his + live photos
TheBoyDeadly by TheBoyDeadly February 22nd, 2008

Cadence Weapon has revealed that he’s recorded a track with Simian Mobile Disco for their forthcoming album.

Speaking to Drowned in Sound – along with DJ Weasel – before his headline show at London’s Bardens Boudoir on Wednesday night, the rapper – real name Rollie Pemberton – spoke about how his chatter was provoked by the leeching entourage surrounding a mystery artist he saw at gig in New York.

“They asked me to do a vocal for a track on their new album. I’ve called it ‘Hangers On’ or ‘Hanging On’, but I don’t know where it’s going to end up – I did my vocal a couple of months ago.

“It’s actually about a show I went to once in Manhattan,” continued Pemberton, whose Afterparty Babies longplayer will be released at the start of March.

“I’m not gonna say who it’s about, not gonna say anyone specific,” he insisted, when pressed. “There was about 50 people onstage but they all looked miserable and unhappy to be there.”

He also revealed that at this moment in time his next album will be inspired by Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist text Nausea - writing has already begun for it, and Roquentin - the novel's protagonist - could become its title. Moreover, Pemberton says he wants the record to be sample heavy and will request that Leonard Cohen allows a spiritual re-working of ‘Death of a Ladies’ Man’ on which the legendary folk musician’s chorus hook will be linked by bursts of wisecracking Pemberton rap.

This did all come, however, with the caveat that the focus may well switch over the coming months and the third album would be about shoes.

“I’m really into shoes right now,” explained Pemberton.

Anyway, there was eventually a show on Wednesday night and it was pretty great, as Cadence Weapon followed Cutting Pink With Knives and then The Carps onto the Bardens stage, where he was joined intermittently by Big Dada label-mate Jammer (AKA the Murkle Man).
