Since releasing his debut album, 'Tubeway Army' back in 1978, Gary Numan's chart successes have included the two number 1 singles 'Are Friends Electric?' ('covered' by Sugababes) and 'Cars' (covered by Fear Factory) and five Top 3 albums. In total 26 Gary Numan albums have entered the UK Top 75. That is to say, on average, one a year for a quarter of a century...
Current bands have continued to endorse him over the last few years, including 1997's tribute compilation featuring Damon Albarn, Moloko and The Magnetic Fields. The 'Exile' album (the most popular in years) came with a sell-out UK, European, and American tour where Marilyn Manson dueted to 'Down In The Park' at the LA concert. Endorsement from Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan and Trent Reznor from Nine Inch Nails and a Top 5 'Cars' cut-up by Armand Van Helden all add to his cultural weight.
Oh, and 'Rip' was Kerrang! TV's last number 1 requested song with the phone ringtone version getting heavy attention also...
