Wavves frontman apologises for Primavera on-stage 'breakdown', cancels UK tour
JoeDiddly by Luke Slater June 1st, 2009
and Toby Price

Wavves lead-fella Nathan Williams has apologised for his on-stage near, if not actual, breakdown at Primavera festival this weekend.

According to reports, the band spent much of their set on Thursday bickering, bawling and fighting with each other and Williams was just sort of listlessly and aimlessly strumming his guitar for large chunks of it. Projectiles were thrown both by the band, and at the band.

See Toby Price's pic (above) of Williams looking less than OK.

Anyway, in a post on his Ghost Ramp blog Williams wrote the following:

Primavera/Europe

I think in the back of my head I knew I wasn't exactly mentally healthy enough to continue to tour the way I have been since February. Honest truth is this has all happened so fast and I feel like the weight of it has been building for months now with what seems like a never ending touring and press schedule which includes absolutely zero time to myself. I'm sorry to everyone who has put effort into this and to everyone who supported me. Mixing ecstasy valium and xanax before having to play in front of thousands of people was one of the more poor decisions I've made(duh) and I realize my drinking has been a problem now for a good period of time. Nothing else I can do but apologize to everyone that has been affected by my poor decision making. I made a mistake. Not the first mistake I've made and it for sure wont be the last. I'm human. Don't know why I chose the biggest platform I could imagine to loose my shit, but that's life. You live and you learn.

That blog post has since been taken down for reasons unknown - intriguing, eh? - but the link above is a Google cached version.

The band then cancelled their set the following day in Lisbon. Friday's Spanish show and today's Porto date have also been chopped. The status of the rest of the tour - some 28 dates and 6 weeks - is unconfirmed.

UPDATE - Wavves' entire UK tour has been pulled; in a brief statement Nathan Williams said:

I'm sorry to everyone who has put effort into this and to everyone who supported me.

Were you there when the Primavera meltdown happened? Do you have any more information on what occurred? Did you recognise what songs they actually played?

DiS, of course, went to Primavera to sample the Catalonian delights. Stay tuned for our in-depth review and photos of the event.
