Abe Vigoda announce new album details, download new track
JoeDiddly by Luke Slater July 6th, 2010

Once tropical-punks Abe Vigoda return with their new album, the follow-up to 2008's fantastical Skeleton later this year. That'll come out on Bella Union on September 20, which is all very exciting, no? It bloody well is, I say. Oh, and it's called Crush, by the way.

A change of direction is hinted at in the press release, but that's all irrelevant when they are giving away a track from the album. That should give a clear indication of what the hell it's going to sound like. So without any further ado, you can get your grubby cyber mitts on 'Throwing Shade' here.

The line-up has shifted slightly, with Dane Chadwick replacing Reggie Guerro on the drums. Guitarist Juan Velasquez was appparently heavy into UK dreampop and goth when writing Crush. So heaven knows. Vocalist Michael Vidal, on the other hand, said:

“My favourite kind of music is instantly nostalgic and emotionally confusing. And reverb has always been a big part of our sound. We were definitely inspired by cold wave and minimal wave stuff, as well as Arthur Russell.”

It's fair to say that all of these influences can be heard in 'Throwing Shade', which I think will be more of a grower. Once you get past the relatively grating synth stabs.
