Marquee Re-opening
afuture1 by Andrew Future July 24th, 2003
The north London club formerly known as The Marquee, will re-open in September as the Islington Academy and IA2. It follows the venue’s closure in January after going into administration.

The venue was opened last year in an attempt to recreate the 'original' Marquee Club in Soho, which famously saw performances by everyone from the Stones to Oasis. The venue relaunched with performances by the likes of Primal Scream in the 800 capacity club, which is situated next to GAP in the centre of Angel shopping centre.

Despite being a great venue with a top sound system, it failed to meet financial targets. The UK’s most prominent promoter, Mean Fiddler, announced poor financial results earlier in the year too. After selling off loss-making entities from its portfolio, it has said it will concentrate on festivals and venues like the Astoria, down the road in London’s Soho district.

DiScuss: Did the threat of being beaten by cider swilling townies hanging outside the shops kill The (new) Marquee’s indie spirit? Or were there just no decent gigs there?
