O'Connell beat off (oooh err) competition from Jonathan Ross and tubby loudmouth Chris Moyles to win the award. The judges stated: "He takes the breakfast show format, shakes it by the throat and creates a show that entertains, sometimes annoys but also excites."
Radio 4 won the award for the best station of the year, and London's Heart 106.2 took home the gong for best local station.
On a fairly unrelated note, O'Connell, like me, is a Southampton supporter. At least we won something, then.
