Filthy Dukes

This Rhythm

Label: Fiction Release Date: 17/12/2007

30558
TinPanAl by Alex Denney December 18th, 2007

London party veterans Olly Dixon and Tim Lawton have clearly been taking notes from recent tourmates LCD Soundsystem and Hot Chip, ditching their laptops for a live set-up on Filthy Dukes’ forthcoming debut album, due in Spring next year.

As the first of the fruits to be reaped from that endeavour, for which they made a permanent recruit of long-standing cohort Mark Ralph, ‘This Rhythm’ will do nicely indeed. Stern of visage and pneumatic of feet, it’s great, populist future-schlock along the lines of New Order and Gary Numan, blessed with an uncannily Prince-like vocal turn from Late Of The Pier frontman Samuel Dust.

Light years removed from the goon-like buffoonery advocated by new rave, Filthy Dukes sound like they take loads of drugs and never end up dribbling loved-up nonsense at strangers through gritted teeth come the end of the night. In other words: fucking cool.
