Deer Tick - The Black Dirt Sessions

Review by Jazz Monroe

For all its occasional flourishes, The Black Dirt Sessions suffers the tiresome consistency of a record aware of its own slight irrelevance; always good, but never great.»

deer tick is an american indie folk band from providence, rhode island led by guitarist and singer-songwriter john mccaule. deer tick's music has often been described as a combination of folk, blues, and country with a strong grunge influence. the sluggish roll of neil young and crazy horse can be discerned in the undercarriage of a song like 'when she comes home', while the grizzled, weather-beaten tone of songwriter john mccauley's voice hints at hard experience, especially buttressed with haunted backing moans in rem style, as on '20 miles'. his plaintive manner is well suited to the prayerful slant of 'choir of angels' and 'christ jesus'.
