Sneaker Pimps

Bloodsport

Label:

shays by shays May 9th, 2002

Most people say that it's easier to write a review of a band where you criticise them and in some respects I agree with that. However I am going to criticise this album … and trust me it really isn’t easy. How do you criticise one of your favourite bands ever? A band that you spent an entire summer listening to their debut album when you were younger. A band that well should have been a whole lot more.

First of this is classic Sneaker Pimps, which is my main gripe about this album, its too classic Sneaker Pimps. All of the songs seem to be rehashes of previous releases. To put it bluntly this band should have and could have progressed.

You can listen to the album without ever really being drawn into it. To listen to it almost as background music, which is not what I want them to do. I want them jumping about in my brain tearing out random thoughts and replacing them shards of pent up emotion. This album just does not do that.

That is apart from the track after which the album is named, _"Bloodsport…". It's got one of those infectious groves that makes you wiggle your hips in motion, it has a Numanesque little synth line going on in the back ground that just demands that you dance to it. In fact I find myself sat here with a glass of Tesco’s finest red jiggling about in the most ridiculous manner imaginable.

So all in all it’s a bit of a disappointment. I really did want to like this album after spending months going into my local HMV to see if it had been released, only to be told that it had been put back yet again… In fact in the end the poor staff at HMV greeted my arrival at the shop with a simple shake of their head.

Thanx for the memories but I think its really time to move on.
