Five years ago I published an interview with this duo in one of my first fanzines. The experimental crunching guitar, emotional vocals, and clunking drum machine were a breath of fresh air to a fanzine scene saturated in "teen-c power". Who would have thought that of all the unsigned bands of the time (hands up who remembers Moonpump or Murph?) the Skinflowers would still be here. Not that they had a chance to split up mind, being brothers and all.
Their latest demo (presented on mini-cdr) continues in the firmly awkward indie rock mould they’ve carved out over the years. The drum machine is still here, making a track like "Talks In Contracts" sound like New Order beating themselves over the head with Depeche Mode circa 1994. Which is clearly a good thing.
Clearly they are a strange beast, unconventional enough to scare off wider commercial appeal yet simply not unsettling enough to attract the cult followings of bands like At The Drive In or Mouldy Peaches. Those with a liking for the listenably odd should investigate further.
