I shuddered when I read the press release describing French Kicks as “savvy NYC types”. 'Surely not another identikit Manhattan band dressing up in suit jackets and jeans and wishing that they could be hanging out at CBGBs with Blondie?', I thought. No need to worry though, manufactured disco-punk is not the order of the day.
This is stripped-down, ESG-esque music. A simple drum beat and a bass run the show on ’Close to Modern’, while a piano melody works nicely as the song chugs along at a slow pace. Annoyingly however, all of a sudden it's over. I understand these days bands want to sound as if they’re from the late 70s/early 80s but someone needs to tell these boys not all songs have to be less than three minutes.
