Gizeh Label Sampler

Label: Gizeh Records Release Date: 15/11/2005

Jordan_229_2 by Jordan Dowling November 22nd, 2005

For those yet to be acquainted with Gizeh imagine a midlands based version of Kranky. You might not like everything on the label, but you can guarantee that for the most part you are going to find many new and exciting bands

With my only previous Gizeh listening being a few tracs from Immune and Detwiije, both who are featured on this five track CD, the opener, Profane'sTurning Bloodletting into an artformtook me by suprise. Crashing in with a fractured drum beat and droning metal guitars it takes the form of a more intricite ISIS, weaving in high-speed riffing and a good sense of melody with guttural screaming. Fans of Cult of Luna would approve.

Immune could be the perfect antidote for TooL fans still pining away for TooL's next album, if only they didnt take as long as MJK's band of merry satanists to make a record. Their debut is already six months overdue but if Monkey, their first recorded release since 2004 'Elek' is more than worth the wait. Snapping drums and complex melodys are interlaced in the same way as Oceansize do, but the whole process is more relaxed and seems less forced. And for its eccentricites and complexicitys the track still remains extremely catchy. This could be an introduction to one of the greatest albums of this decade, if they get it recorded in time.

Some may like Detwiije's brand of violin lead introspective post-rock, highlighted here on the title track from their debut album Would you rather be followed by forty ducks for the rest of your life but as someone who has every Godspeed You! Black Emperor release there is nothing in it for me

Glissandro and Greenland bring up the CD, the first track being akin to locking Jonsi up in a dark room with only percussive instruments while the second makes like Ennio Morricone with an orchestra made up of wet british indie bands. Neither tracks are great but both have enough originality and presence to warrant a listen

So things are looking good for the future, if this sampler is any precursor. Check the label website for gigs taking place late November, which feature many of the bands on this CD. Theres worse ways you could spend your money
