KEITH

Mona Lisa's Child

Label: Lucky Number Release Date: 28/08/2006

dionisio by Rob Webb September 5th, 2006

** Keith** isn't a great name in my opinion. I knew a lad called Keith at school, and he was a dick. Still, being the model of integrity that I am, I won't let this cloud my judgement, nor the hyperbole-fest that is their biography. Just like every other band (according to their PR, anyway), Keith are “unique”.

Not so sunshine - I've definitely heard this somewhere before, namely in the Hacienda while off my tits on E (the author would have been less than ten if this were true – Legal Ed). Certainly, Keith strike me as Madchester babies, and singer Oli Bayston's voice isn't from anywhere else but the home of New Order_ et al. In truth, his delivery is closer to Morrissey than either Sumner or Ryder, though the opening words of “All you ever do is whine_” could easily be a slight on Mozzer's festival displays this year.

With an ebullient, insistent bass-line and funky, Latino percussion, this is certain to get feet stomping across indie clubland, and with the radio edit clocking in at three-minutes-thirty airplay shouldn't be a problem, either. All that's missing, to these ears, is a little bit of soul; something to make me love it rather than like it. Check out the Simian Mobile Disco remix though, 'cause that's ace.
