The Paddingtons

Panic Attack

Label: Poptones Release Date: 25/04/2005

8076
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver April 5th, 2005

Coming on like the snot-punk younger siblings of The Libertines – tunes intact but attitude amplified – The Paddingtons are quite possibly the weekly rags’ wet dreams made real. Rollicking drums propel ‘Panic Attack’ down blackened alley and into debauched club, while rasping, confrontational vocals dare the listener into Hari Kiri. It’s a formula that can’t fail, right?

Um, right, actually. Whilst the compact disc medium offers no visual thrills, one assumes that these new(ish) boys about town have the stylishly bedraggled looks to match their sizeable power-pop-punk hooks. ‘Panic Attack’ possesses balls bigger than a certain frontman’s mouth, and swagger enough to romp to the upper echelons of the pop charts given decent radio play. A cover of a cover, ‘Molly’s Lips’* (yes, that one), rounds off a should-be breakthrough single.

Put it this way: we’d much rather this was on that cover instead of Ksb*n or Rz*rl*ght, please.

*'Molly's Lips' on CD version only
