Incubus

Drive

Label: Sony Release Date: 11/06/2001

Another love song? Just what we need. A ballad, acoustic guitars, "oooh yeahs" blah-di-blah. Boring!

…but wait!! This is Incubus! This is not another nu-metal band to disregard and laugh at. Nor is this another insincere mainstream ooze of fake glow in the dark orange tan. And please don’t be fooled by the above mention of acoustic guitars because this is far from some shoe-gazing band dusting off their cardigans, whinging about the girl in the thick NHS specs, who’s allergic to all types of pets. No, no, no!

Taken from criminally underrated ‘Make Yourself lp, ’Drive’ is the kind of love song which rekindles the fire of love. Yeah, maybe it can be called a rock ballad, I mean it does have the odd harmony, drum smack and a guitar or two. What makes this different is the lil’ samples and scratches and the voice of Brandon. By stereotypical definition Brandon Boyd is a heartthrob, but to thousands(at the moment), rather than millions and that is because for some reason Incubus, haven't had the kick from the media they deserve. Maybe the band wanna 'keep it real' and let people discover them for their artistic abilities rather than as a soundbite to fill, rather than define, a moment of airtime. It’s pretty obvious that da kidz are goin’ off the 'Poopa Bizkin' medley being rammed down their hooded-necks by the evil-meeeja-machine. It’s sad but true. Whether it is a good or bad thing, I'm not sure, it could just mean more fans for Hear'say or whatever the latest craze is. It seems, fashion thingys can’t be cool if you’re told it’s cool. This band - which plenty of people who’ve borrowed my CDs will agree - will give you ice burns! It's a painful pleasure thing, but it won't send you to a shrink in it's dark wake.

Although it has to be said this single resembles something Pearl Jam might have directed at the great unwashed, but don't let that put you off because it’s a lot less akin to all that and more of it’s own thing. That said, this is far from radically different to anything you’ve ever heard but it’s easily loveable…no-one ever said love was gonna be easy. Confused? ”I drive myself / My light is found / Whatever tomorrow brings / I’ll be there / with open arms and open eyes, yeah / I'll be there”
