Arcade Fire

Neighborhood #3 (Power Out)

Label: Rough Trade Release Date: 23/05/2005

Reviewers at DiS HQ have been getting down and dirty. Fighting in their masses to get ahead in the lines to review The Arcade Fire**. Why? Because, quite simply the plaudits are running out, and the last people in will have literally, nothing to say that hasn't been joyously preached before. And so it goes, with the second single from the quite wonderful 'Funeral' LP that it's only our fine perspicacity that allows us to find words to sum up our excitement (still) at hearing this song coarse it's way through our speakers.

'Neighbourhood #3 (Power Out)_' is awesome; awe inspiring in its ability to be driving yet somehow soothing, intimate yet grandiose, catchy yet utterly unique. It's that thudding kick drum, the deranged scream melding with the lead-guitar bassline, the fact that in four minutes, it stops and starts like a beautiful old motorcar and sounds totally now. But timeless. Naturally.

Singer Win offers strangely affecting gothic lyrics "Ice has covered up my parents / hands don't have any dreams don't have any plans / Growin' up in some strange storm / nobody's cold, nobody's warm," and, as we wrap ourselves up warm by the fire, with the warm glow of the Arcade Fire in front of us, be safe in the knowledge that they're a _proper band. An important band.
