Yadnus EP

Label: Warp Records Release Date: 12/11/2007

29127
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver November 12th, 2007

A digital-only collection of remixes – source material lifted from latest LP Myth Takes (review) – this five-tracker is headed up by a straight-faced direct transfer of ‘Yadnus’, albeit in radio edit form. Undeniably a highlight from the bi-coastal collective’s best album yet, the four-minute cut is a filthily throbbing masterpiece of low-trousered funk, that ‘f’ word employed for the best possible reasons here. This can not be compared to the newly redecorated interior of a high-flying middle-class twunt-fuck businessman’s crash-pad on the Isle of Dogs. “Fuh-u-nky, yah.” Die.

With one of those widdly guitars wobbling away in the background – guitars only come in two models these days, y’know: those that widdle-wobble and those that riff-crunch-slay – ‘Yadnus’ is a compact hit of dancefloor feverishness, intense in its effectiveness. By contrast, the remixes here – of the title track and also ‘Heart of Hearts’ and ‘Must Be The Moon’ – are of varying quality: Emperor Machine’s dub version of the latter doesn’t add a thing to the original track and, subsequently, tumbles into the why-bother bracket, but Berlin-based DJ Kaos’ bleep-heavy shuffle of ‘Heart Of Hearts’ is pleasingly bonkers: ‘70s soulfulness meets Tron-tinged 8-bit digital hand-clap beats.

Essential? Nah, of course not. But if your cursor finds its way to the ‘Yandus’ EP, you’ll find it complements the feverous pace of Myth Takes quite excellently.
