Guilty Language Of Gossip / One Side Of A Conversation

Label: Captains of Industry Release Date: 27/02/2006

-gen- by Gen Williams February 27th, 2006

There's a particular mannerism that Oceansize affect when they play live. They stand impenetrable and expressionless, feet apart, chins jutting into the air, their wrists sawing mechanically across the bodies of their guitars. It's a martial posture that says "We are Power, made sonic and physic, and our music will render you subordinate." Do Leicestershire's TEAM assume the same stance? You can see it now, listening to the muscular 'Guilty Language Of Gossip', with its Shellacquered poker face and rigid guitar spasms.

Guitars like rolling thunder and a nod to Bridge & Tunnel's lonely Midwestern landscapes beckon one into its unfriendly confines, but the self-consciously macho vocals that stride across it grate hard, as do the clumsy lyrics - "I want it right now / the fact is I need it somehow... I believed in the stories by them / And by whom I considered a friend". Nonetheless it's redeemed by the chorus's harmonic warcry, engulfing the entire song in flaming, righteous power.

The flipside is the killer though - with a warning blast of drums, a homicidal rampage bursts forth. The singer's ranting soliloquy washes away the mannered sins of its predecessor, revealing something instinctual and violent, sprayed feverishly like Cedric Bixler's breathless declarations in 'Invalid Litter Dept.'. If 'Guilty...' is battle waged by the rules of engagement, 'One Side Of A Conversation' leads an altogether more lawless charge; a bomb in a city centre, guerrilla warfare fought dirtily and desperately, a crack squad rendered in SVGA and dispatched to eliminate the baddies in an splatter of pixelated guts and guns. Sticks smash through skins, downtuned strings snap violently, their tension shattered by the song's massive force. It's immense fun and indicative of what TEAM are really capable of.
