That’s ‘mastercraft’ to you, oh vowel-lovin’ Regular John, a.k.a. the dance side project of Death From Above 1979’s Jesse F Keeler (alongside one AL-P). MSTRKRFT’s debut single ‘Easy Love’ is a retro-is-the-future disco belter, the kind of bass-thumpin’ blast-from-the-past with its ears in next year that Les Rhythms Digitales once regaled us with so wonderfully; silky synthesizers and digitised vocals bringing to mind thoughts of synchronised robot dancers and lazer lights carving the initials ‘JFK’ into the dry ice-filled air.
Regular remixers – previous clients include Panthers and Bloc Party – MSTRKRFT include their take on Metric’s ‘Monster Hospital’ on the flipside of this twelve-inch. Not as instantly floor-filling as the lead track it may be, but ‘Monster Hospital’_ gets glossed into a pulsating, glitzy, happy-clappin’ track to superb effect nonetheless, showcasing Keeler and AL-P’s ability to turn near enough anything into a dancefloor behemoth.
Expect MSTRKRFT’s forthcoming album, The Looks, to be the record to dance about your handbag to upon its release.
