With Boston-influenced (the city, not the band – think Isis) metalcore shaping up to be the emo of, say, 2004 (?), what better time to get into a genre that’s shows all the signs of EXPLODING! Over here we’ve got Eden Maine, Beecher and Johnny Truant doing things with rock music that has one foot firmly in hardcore, and the other dipping its toes in the slightly tepid water of 80’s metal, and now here’s Emotive Exposed to add to that fledgling list.

‘A Period of This’ has three tracks – two are Botch-meets-Dillinger Escape Plan style, one of which is an Isis-aping instrumental – and every one is a winner (particularly the strong opener ‘Russian Bride’), give or take a little over-heating of the melting pot of ideas. That’s the only real problem with this demo – it tries a little too hard to be too accomplished and display disparate styles, when it would benefit more from a straight-ahead, ‘here we are and this is what we are’ mentality. By trying to diversify over three tracks they run the risk of spreading their appeal too thinly at an early stage.

Still, as far as promising goes, this is right up there with Saints’ UEFA Cup hopes. That’s intended as a great compliment – I’m a Southampton supporter.
