A duo from Philadelphia, Mad Action (Paul Nicgurski and Ryan Bernstein), count BRMC as their mates and ‘Teac Attack’ is the first of two new EPs. ‘Just Like Fresh Air’ gets a release on March 29. _‘Teac Attack’ _is the more interesting of the two – a jumbled mess of influences melting in a giant fondue pot, spooned over the eccentric heroes of One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest before being served on your mum’s finest china.
It’s a lo-fi romp through the history of rock and roll, evoking hazy, happy memories of everyone from the Flying Burrito Brothers through Neil Young and on to Pavement and Guided By Voices. Sure, it lacks cohesion – _‘Teac Attack’ _essentially comprises some kind of scruffy preliminary sketch for the as-yet unrealised bigger picture – but it makes up for that with an affecting, effortless charm. Yeah they’ve got big-hitting mates, but to be honest, Mad Action don’t need anyone else’s legs to stand on but their own.
