[The Real] Tuesday Weld

The Ugly And The Beautiful

Label: PIAS Recordings Release Date: 02/08/2004

joe_shoo by Shoo July 20th, 2004

_The drugs just aint enough

Though I like the way they made us crazy

But love’s the only drug

That turns the ugly into the beautiful_

Stephen Coates. AKA [the real] Tuesday Weld AKA the Clerkenwell Kid is on fine form on this, the first single proper from the magnificently auld-radio samplefest album I, Lucifer, and it’s a sardonic, bittersweet indie-charm lopsided paean to happiness, humbug dreams and everything underneath the winking stars of hope and human happiness.

So. Lyrics = ace. Music = pastiche of jazz hoppy hop jaunty daft electronic genre-bumping silliness which, despite being completely ripped off from She's Electric, still makes me want to jump around indoors and outdoors and grab passing strangers and kiss them and smile and hold hands with the rest of the world.

Check out the Backini mix for a clock-neck, hip-swivelling slab of strange, lounge-kiddie-dance brilliance. Combine this with a suitably quirky video on the CD single – and it’s also out on 10” – and it’s enough to make ya realise that, cor, this music stuff can be dead good sometimes, really. Specially when the Senor Coconut virtually instrumental remix’s sole words are the constantly repeated mantra of ‘Cha Cha Cha’. Ah, heck. It’s enough to make your head float off into Ladybird-land.

No need for navelgazing po-facedness when Coates grins his way through life like this: inclusive misfit pop with wit and mischief in abundance. Absolutely wonderful, just like love itself.
