Abigail Hopkins, daughter of award-winning actor Anthony, last night played unannounced to a less-than-capacity crowd at London's Upstairs at the Garage venue, the first act on a bill of four.
The singer, still finding her feet in the industry despite having two albums to her name and an appearance at 2004's South By South West under her belt, is keen to distance herself from the glamour that goes with the offspring of famous sorts. Whereas others will, and do, trade on their relatives' successes, Abigail is - to quote the Evening Standard's website - "determined to make it on her own terms".
Of course, Abigail could have easily chosen a grander venue for her performance, such is the draw of her surname alone. So, good for her we say. She performed alongside a guitarist and cellist, and the Standard reports that she was also adept on the 12-string guitar, and that her voice reminded the writer on the scene of Kate Bush. The crowd apparently didn't know quite what to make of it: applause was light and silences uneasy.
