Service, please? Postal duo talk about potential new album
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver June 27th, 2006

Has it been three years since Give Up? Yep, it has: get over it. But cry thee not, indie kid so pale, as it seems more and more likely that the not-so-dynamic duo of Ben Gibbard and Jimmy Tamborello will release a new Postal Service album in the not-too-distant future.

The pair have been talking about the project with both MTV and Pitchfork. Gibbard told the former:

"We're slowly starting. We're crawling right now, and whether that crawl turns into a walk remains to be seen. But we'll know more towards the end of the year. I've just been touring so much and trying to find time to make it happen and make our schedules line up."

Indeed, it's Death Cab For Cutie's hectic touring schedule that is currently applying the brakes on a new Postal Service LP; that, and the fact that, with a major label now pressuring him, Gibbard already has the next Death Cab album in mind. (I'm) in the very early stages of writing a new Death Cab record, too," the singer told MTV.

Tamborello recently spoke to Pitchfork:

"We're talking about wanting to finish an album by sometime next year, because we have to work with Death Cab's schedule and stuff. I definitely want to do another one."

Any radical stylistic departures are unlikely, but the pair will look to work with Jenny Lewis more on the new album, should they find the time to start it properly. The Rilo Kiley singer appeared on Give Up, and Tamborello told Pitchfork that he hoped she'd find enough time to contribute again.

MTV reports that two new Postal Service songs have so far been completed. Rather than sending material in the post, though, the pair are now using the internet: "Doing stuff online is a lot easier now," said Tamborello. "We probably won't be using the actual mail."
