Rosita

Santa Poca's Dream EP

Label: Grand Royal Release Date: 03/07/2000

ransell by Rachelle Ansell July 3rd, 2000

Pop, eh? Beware because it is EEEEEEEEEVIL. The devil’s work!!!! It brings to mind boybands in colour co-ordinated puce outfits, dance routines that look like an eighties workout and 8 year olds jumping around lisping masochistic lyrics that encourage paedophiles!! Don’t touch it with a barge – pole because you’ll lose all that carefully aquired cool and then you’ll never really be indie and subversive.

What a load of old bollocks!!!!! I really hate pop persecutors because they miss out on all the good stuff, such as music you can dance to, jump to, hum along to and that doesn’t take itself too seriously. Less the devil’s work and more like going out and having some fun instead of sitting at home listening to Primal Scream and being depressed because the world is a big, ‘orrible, scary, smelly place full of fascists.

The title track on Rosita’s ep wouldn’t be out of place in a magpie’s nest. It’s glittery and is the sonic equivalent of those cute shimmery butterfly hair clips. Although it would have to be a black one as the lyrics hide Rosita’s dark side. Jangly, with handclaps and vocals that are battling with the music to be heard, it’s a song to dance around your living room to.

If Santa Poca’s Dream was a night on the town then the EP’s second song would be the hangover. Down Here is a yearning ballad who’s song plot could be summed up with the words “Where have you beeeeen all this time?”. The song’s atmosphere is rather dark. The whole thing is finished off with Demon, a thrashy guitar instrumental that seems to be a good outake of one of their jamming sessions. Perhaps pop does have more to do with the devil than I first believed.
