Love Story

Label: XL Recordings Release Date: 13/01/2003

bchandler by Ben Chandler January 24th, 2003

Aaah, the first great ‘chill-out’ single of the year. Most people wont give this one a chance. I mean, it's hardly pounding. As a dance anthem it ain't exactly a mover either. But if you thing of Robert Sanchez's 'Another Chance,' and how many times it took you to really, properly get into that, then 'Love Story' becomes a little gem. Replace the camp Spanish rent boy vocal, with a 'luvved-up' nightclub soul singer, and you’ve got the sonic difference between the two records. But don’t forget the Sun, Sea Sand sax solo. This has got that, too.

The ‘story’ itself is a pretty cool and lyrical one when you think of where the situation which it must be set: In the sweaty clubs of Ibiza (and the one flaw of it is that it conforms so much to the club compilation stereotype- easy-on-the-ear melody, nice baseline, without ever suggesting that there is a need to ‘look outside the box’ a bit). So the singer sings: “You’ll come knocking one day like a thief in the night.” It’s a pretty cool idea for a lyric don’t you think? Like the record as a whole in fact: A cool idea that’s been done before. A fragrant cliché.
