Paloalto

Fade Out/In

Label: American Recordings Release Date: 10/02/2003

domgourlay by Dom Gourlay February 10th, 2003

When Fred Durst says he likes something that usually means one of two things - he's either the main financial benefactor or he wants to shag the lead singer, while the end result is usually as banal and insipid as his own musical output.

At a guess, I'd say the first point doesn't apply as he's probably spent most of his wealth trying to find a new guitarist, while Britney would no doubt throw a tantrum if the latter was to be the case.

Imagine my surprise then that 'Fade Out/In' is actually a half decent pop song, not a million miles away from the stuff Ash have been churning out recently but thankfully a fair few continents away from turgid dross like Staind, the last bunch of middle aged bores endorsed by Durst.

The singer James Grundler sounds like he wants to be the next Thom Yorke - I mean Paloalto even take their name from the Radiohead song of the same name for chrissakes - but sometimes the overdone vocal lilt at the end of each verse bears more resemblance to Starsailor's James Walsh, which is not an affliction anyone would want to be saddled with, I'm sure.

Still, Paloalto don't wear big shorts and baseball caps or matching charity shop purchased suits, none of them are called Brad or Chad and furthermore, they don't sing about high schools and baseball games.

In fact, they're about the most untypical Americans you could wish for, and that alone is a worthy cause for celebration.
