A revolution has started; it began in my bedroom and is changing my world. What is this revolution you ask?…It’s the battle of the genres! Up until about 6 months ago I was strictly an Indie kid and I mean that to the fullest extent of the word. I ate, drank and slept indie. Then something changed, leading me to the new situation in which I now find myself, where genres do battle against genres each jousting for supremacy and that ever elusive spot… the top of my ever increasing demo mountain… the ‘to do’ pile! Recently indie had taken a back seat trailing behind in a disappointing third positing, losing out to Lo-fi and top runner emo-core. Then I stumbled upon this…
‘You bring The Balloons’, is the debut demo from Welsh band, Curerbell: - rocketing indie back up the bedroom chart!
‘Nobody Knows Everyone’** opens this E.P. A track where throughout the obvious Travis/ Coldplay influences are noticeable with Fran healy-esque vocals and shiver-esque chord sequences, but what with the current trend being as they are, the potential here it to make it big.
Surreal in set up, ‘Straw Man’** presents the listener with a hazy summery ambience. Though the message throughout may revolve around the age old indie themes such as broken hearts, love lost and loneliness, the musical back grounding is slightly set apart in this song acting as a slightly distinguishable feature.
‘Gem’* and ‘Confetti’* each containing samples from 90’s pop songs and films respectively, admirable wrap up the proceedings. Although not memorable or truly distinguishable they act as more than adequate closing points, ensuring that the band are certain to leave some form of impression on the listener, and in this case I’m happy to say they’ve left a good one!
The band in truth are just indie to the fullest extent of the word. With the main musical fronting consisting of a pretty, lively and jovial facet laid perfectly over an agnsty theme of loneliness and the result… Instantly sing-along-able choruses complete with harmonies and hand claps alike.
Long live the revolution!
