1. Camera Obscura - 'The Sweetest Thing'

This little chunk of characteristically poppy Camera Obscura was released on Monday, and as a consequence features in our Singles Round Up, undertaken as enthusiastically as is humanly possible by Wendy Roby. It may now be Friday, which means tomorrow is Saturday and, at about 1700 hours or so, the weekend starts. Kick it all off by listening to this over your lunch or something...

2. Local Natives - 'Sun Hands'

We reviewed Local Natives' record Gorilla Manor t'other day. It is quite good, as says Clare Joslin in her review. 'Sun Hands' meanders nicely and gradually gets there, via a considered use of vocal harmonies and tick-tocking percussive beats.

3. The Broken Family Band - 'Hey Captain!'

We tried so very hard to come up with a great pun for our interview with The Broken Family Band, and The Broken Family (dis)Band was the winner by a fair furlong. Yeah, they split up. Sadface or something. Here's a 3.5 minute, moderately optimistic lament to remember them by.

4. Lightspeed Champion - 'Devils Trick For A Bitch'

This week has, without the slightest shadow of anything approaching doubt, been the busiest week for album announcements I can remember in my short time doing the news on this here site. Not a bad thing, given who was doin' the announcing. Though Lightspeed Champion's first record was received perhaps only lukewarmly, it has some great tracks on it, like this one. He does use the 'n' word, though, and the MF word. Bad boy, Dev.

5. iLiKETRAiNS - 'We Go Hunting'

This band may sound like they should have been around...erm...20 or so years ago, but what they do, they do brilliantly. Sometimes I wish they had a bit more CLOUT, yet their tendency for unusual lyrical matter and dark, brooding soundscapes make them the perfect choice for Halloween...which was...errrrr...last week. Anyway, read this week's review of them, live.

6. Liars - 'Freak Out'

Back to the ol' album news section here. Liars' new one will be called Sisterworld and will be out early next year, which is pretty exciting, to be frank. Here's 'Freak Out', which should make you wanna...dance. HARD.

7. Cold Cave - 'Roman Skirts'

We reviewed Cold Cave's Love Comes Close this week but, as is sometimes the way, it's not on Spotify. Instead! We chose something else, the ambient, metallic electronic warbling of 'Roman Skirts'. It reminds me of an orb. Not the electronic group, but an actual orb, like the blue glowing one which was in Doom, the computer game. And YOU?

8. Kelpe - 'Eye Candy Bath'

What's wrong with the odd concept review here and there? Absolutely nothing is the answer, especially when done well, like Daniel B. Yates's review of Kelpe's Cambio Wechsel, which, at the end of it all, was given 7/10. At this point in the playlist you should be flowing and glowing in the presence of electronica, and onward it goes...

9. Four Tet - 'No More Mosquitoes'

...to Four Tet, a.k.a Kieran Hebden, who also released details about his new record this week. It'll be his first one for a while and, again, we're all quite stoked for it. IN THE MEANTIME, listen to 'No More Mosquitoes', it'll soothe your pain, truly and truly. Anyone else think that 'e' looks odd in 'Mosquitoes'? Me too.

10. Yeti Lane - 'Lonesome George'

We met Yeti Lane earlier in the week and quizzed them accordingly. We also took some snaps of them but that was last week, so perhaps less relevant. The lead singer sounds like he can barely muster enough strength to sing, but that's OK with us, it's quite a nice little jolly he's playing along with.

11. These New Puritans - 'Numerology (aka Numbers)'

"WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE NUMBER, WHAT DOES IT MEAN?" sounds like the sort of question they'd ask prospective Oxbridge Philosophy students in an interview, not that I'd have any idea, mind. 'Angular' is how some people might describe this, 'stiff' is how I'd describe it. Stiff in the positive sense, you understand. Either way, you'll be able to get your TNPS fix early next year, when they return with their second album.

12. St. Vincent - 'Marrow'

Not sure how much MORE we need to tell you how fantastico St. Vincent is but we're going to give it another go anyway. Though 'Marrow' is not the best track on Actor, it's still a solid 8 on 10 and would have possibly been a bit more if she'd have used a bridge as a breakwater between the verse and the chorus. OH, and it was out SINGLE OF THE WEEK, MOTHERHUMPERS!

13. Sonic Youth - 'Chapel Hill'

The other day I found out that Thurston Moore was about the same age as my dad, then wondered what it'd be like to have Thurston Moore as a dad. Then I realised it might be a bit crap, and I like my actual dad just fine. We reviewed their show at the Kentish Town forum here. Arguably the best song from Dirty, for what it's worth.

14. Morrissey - 'Munich Air Disaster 1958'

Rumour has it that Morrissey is a supporter of Manchester United. I think it highly unlikely, I mean...maybe he said he was when he was a kid or something...though, to be honest, if he said it, it's probably best not to take it as gospel. Here Morrissey submits his tribute, of sorts, to the fallen men and boys of the Munich Air Disaster. It's taken from Swords, a compilation album which we reviewed.

15. Rage Against The Machine - 'Bulls On Parade'

The song that inspired the headline, after Tom Morello admitted that he worked as a stripper. Surprised us all. This is from that period where all RATM songs sound 'xactly the fucking same. Y'know, the wickah-wah-wah guitar, the dun dun dun dun headbanging bass and ZDLR having an almost identical 'flow' on every single track. BAM!

16. Flight Of The Conchords - 'A Kiss Is Not A Contract'

Here we reach the 'joke' section of the playlist though, let's be honest, this track is about a thousand and three times better than the one immediately succeeding it. We reviewed FOTC's new LP, I Told You I Was Freaky here.

17. Weezer - '(If You're Wondering If I Want You To) I Want You To'

Good video. Shit song. I'm going to listen to some Nerf Herder instead. Read our review of Weezer's Raditude. (If You're Wondering If It's Shit) It's Shit.

18. The Hidden Cameras - 'In The Na'

Ah, thank god for that. This one kinda starts off like Blur's 'Essex Dogs', though doesn't go forth in the same manner whatsoever. It begins a little creepily, before adding some fairly endearing MIDI trumpets and general silliness. It'll do, I guess. It also featured in This Week's Singles.

19. Daniel Johnston - 'A Walk In The Wind'

Daniel Johnston then, what can you say? Quite a damned lot, actually, as Nick Neyland did about Is And Always Was. A slight departure from much else on this playlist, but arguably the only place it could go was at the end, so that's where it did. Sad.
