Radio 1’s resident drum’n’bass head Grooverider has been sentenced to spend four years in a Dubai prison after being caught in possession of cannabis.
The fairly ridiculous ruling was passed down today after the DJ, real name Raymond Bingham, was found with 2.16 grams of the drug at Dubai airport back in November last year (report).
Claiming at the time that he’d forgotten the cannabis was in the pocket of a pair of jeans, Bingham will now serve what is the minimum term for drug possession in the United Arab Emirates.
He’s “paid a very high price for a serious mistake," read a statement from Radio 1 and though there’s no word yet on whether or not he’s been officially sacked from his position at the station, his legal team face a tough task if they’re to spring him in time for his show with pal Fabio this Sunday (24 Feb).
