Social networking upstart Facebook is coming for the last thing that MySpace holds dear, today revealing the introduction of a new, iTunes-affiliated music section.
The ominous partnership will allow acts the chance to sell music, merchandise and tickets through the profiles, and listeners will be able to stream tracks and browse photos and full discographies.
Facebook’s new section will ape pretty much all of the features that have allowed MySpace to make such an impact on the way people listen to music – adding artists as a ‘friend’, rating and reviewing tracks, messaging options – while providing possibly more in the way of market research to iTunes and whoever else has their finger in this mud pie.
The profiles, as on MySpace, are free and more than 80 acts have signed up for the launch, including Avril Lavigne, Bruce Springsteen, Coldplay, The Decemberists and Justin Timberlake.
