Sorry it’s taken a little while to get back to you from Glasgow. Blame Glasgow. Saturday’s show was an Epic Spectacular in the mould of great Art School shows. And given that it all took place at the Glasgow School of Art, that was handy. I know there’s a cliché about Glaswegian crowds, but they’re a pretty useful bunch. Probably not as mental as the hundreds of kids standing outside the ABC all day for Funeral for a Friend, but it takes all sorts, doesn’t it?
It’s an odd thing loading out of Dublin on a Friday night and then waking up on a ferry from Belfast en route to Stranraer. That’s three countries in the space on an evening. Part of the reason why we didn’t notice was that a) I was a sleep and b) we’d all drunk a large bottle of booze very quickly.
I dug No Age so hard on Saturday. It was one of those brutal sets, where the songs just sprawled out into psyche-pop brilliance. TNV were great again, building on their wonderful Dublin set, and Los Campesinos! once again had the final say with typical aplomb. And I'm not bigging up No Age just because they gave me a shout out for ‘Cappo’. No I’m not. Thanks though.
I wish I could write these things in the inimitable style of an Alexei JoFo, but you have to remember, he condenses whole months into one big email. I have to do that everyday.
However, if you want that, then here’s a nice blow by blow for what we got up to in Glasgow:
Woke up at 7am being told to get off the bus and onto the ferry. Looked at the horrifically-priced breakfast and decided to buy two bottles of tango for £2 in the shop instead. Got off Ferry and got back into bunk. Fall asleep. Wake up at 2pm, utterly confused. Apparently we’re about to load into the venue. Have lost entire half day to napping. Set up merch stall. Getting better at this and it takes less time each day. Randy and Dean No Age are particularly helpful with selling merch each day, and mind things while I go for a smoke or try to find a beer in the dressing room. Beer goes fast. Head into town, watch a little bit of the Man UTd game, but see no goals. Wander down Sauchiehall street buying presents for my son’s birthday. Decide that Lego Batman for the PSP is the way to go. Head back to venue – showtime soon. All goes well, though Beth TNV comes up to me asking if I’d seen the Whiskey. I Haven’t. It’s gone and TNV are mortified. Sell some merch, Sing really loudly along to ‘We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed’ by LC! Pack up and go to Nice n Sleazy’s in good spirits. Leave the bar early as we have an early bus call (when you’re meant to leave for the next town). Unfortunately, we lose all of TNV. Find most of TNV except Beth. Almost leave Beth in Glasgow. She turns up in nick of time. Go to bed. There.
