Mixtape #24: Tilly And The Wall
dionisio by Rob Webb November 3rd, 2008

Omaha pop troupe Tilly And The Wall (recently on tour with Moshi Moshi labelmates Slow Club) take us through the tracks that are currently rocking their world.

- - -

Key: KA = Kianna Alarid, NJ = Neely Jenkins, DP = Derek Pressnall, JP = Jamie Pressnall, NW = Nick White.

  1. Of Montreal 'Heimdalsgate Like A Promethean Curse' (Acoustic)

They're one of my favourite bands of all time. One main reason being the honest, sometimes painful lyrics coupled with perfect, innovative melodies and insanely catchy pop sensibility. But in this video the pop and all the grandiose layers are stripped away and what is left are the haunting words and sparse acoustic guitar which hits you with some serious force. I cried for a while after I watched it. There are a few videos in this series which are all completely beautiful. It just puts a whole new spin on the genius of Kevin Barnes and Of Montreal. KA (AOL video)

  2. Black Lips 'Veni Vidi Vici'

This song is, like, ridiculously good to me for some reason... It's so simplistic and so effective. The video is creepy and just has really rad imagery. I love the part with the boys dancing in the mirror. They're such good dudes too, we are huge fans! KA (YouTube)

  3. CSS 'Rat Is Dead (Rage)'

This reminds me of one of my all time favourite videos from The Cure ('In Between Days'). They use the same camera techniques and it's so effective. We love these girls/boy! NJ

  4. Elton John 'This Train Don't Stop Here Anymore'

It has such a sweet sentiment and this video is pretty mind blowing! NW (YouTube)

  5. The Knife 'Pass This On'

This video is just fucking insane. It's basically the best video of all time. And by best we mean sexiest. Check out Olof's dance near the end. So hot! KA & NW (YouTube)

  6. The Faint 'The Geeks Were Right'

Amazing video! Amazing song! Amazing band! These are our friends from Omaha and they always make such visually lovely videos. JP (YouTube)

  7. Cyndi Lauper 'Good Enough'

This video is amazing because they filmed it on the Goonies set and you can really see how effective and fun lights and sets can be. Goonies is just so amazing, so this video/song is great because you always picture that movie! JP

  8. SSION 'Wolves Eye'

This video was made in Kansas City by Cody from the band. My boyfriend makes a sweet appearance as one of the cave boys so I guess my opinion may be biased! I love the white dog running in split screen, that's our friend Ari's pup Atlas. He's enormous... KA (YouTube)

  9. Sinead O'Connor 'Emperor's New Clothes'

I just love Sinead's dance moves in this video. Plus, this song is totally ground breaking. DP (YouTube)

  10. Bad Brains 'Big Takeover'

I like how there's a sense of community between the artist and the audience in this video. It looks like fun! DP (YouTube)

  11. X-Ray Spex 'Identity'

I love this song, and this video is cool because you can just watch them play and live vicariously since I never got to see them play. DP
