Cancer diagnoses for Fenech-Soler and TV On The Radio members
JoeDiddly by Luke Slater March 15th, 2011

It's been revealed that both TV On The Radio and Fenech-Soler members have been diagnosed with cancer. Gerard Smith from the American group has lunger cancer, as per a post on the band's website yesterday. It reads:

"Gerard is fortunate enough to have health insurance and is receiving excellent medical care. Already we have seen dramatic results. Combine that with Gerard's legendarily willful disposition and it might just be cancer that has the problem. We appreciate your concern and support for Gerard and his family."

TVOTR's new record comes out on April 11, entitled Nine Types of Light. The band will continue to tour despite this news.

Meanwhile, Fenech-Soler singer Ben Duffy has been diagnosed with testicular cancer, with the band cancelling the remainder of their UK tour and Duffy to undergo chemotherapy. They posted a statement (via NME.com) on their website:

"We are really sorry to have to let you all know that Ben has very recently been diagnosed with early stage cancer. We are absolutely gutted for him, but know that he is in capable hands and he is in really good spirits considering the news."

Duffy himself said:

"The diagnosis has been a big shock for all of us but on the positive side it has been caught very early and the recovery rate for this type of cancer is extremely high."

"I will be continuing to write and work with the band during my treatment and the others will continue to fulfill all DJ engagements. Everyone is very upbeat that I will be fighting fit again in a couple of months. We just want to ask our fans to bear with us while I have treatment and recover. I can't wait to get back on stage and continue with what has been an amazing last year for us."

The band will donate the proceeds from their next single to the Teenage Cancer Trust. Get well soon, guys.
