Depressing grown up's soap opera 'Brookside' is to die at the end of this year. The reason for this being is that there is "no place where BROOKSIDE could survive the C4 schedule" (to quote the press release). In its dying days, the programme will be shifted to Tuesday nights at 11pm. Ouch. Taking its place in the Autumn will be the mighty 'Hollyoaks', which will now be on 5 nights a week rather than the current 4. Not bad for a programme which was initially set to run for 13 episodes.
The creators of boths programmes are set to work on a new daily drama, but never mind that. It sounds rubbish.
Head honcho and TV maverick Phil Redmond said quite a lot of stuff on the subject, the main bits being: "There has been an awful lot of drivel spouted about BROOKSIDE in the last few years... Everything comes down to the fact that Channel 4 changed – and BROOKSIDE didn’t fit the mix. It happens. Life must move on and we have all come to terms with that.
"While it will seem strange to have life without Brookie, HOLLYOAKS continues to go from strength to strength and, of course, GRANGE HILL is continuing back in its spiritual home in the North." So, hurrah.
