The release of this single could not have been timed better - Depeche Mode are riding relatively high in the charts, albeit with a loose remix of an old classic, and there's more than a faint whiff of the Mode to Tom Vek's 'If You Want' - it pulses with a similar menace to 'Enjoy The Silence', although it's greatly dissimilar vocally.
"I guess you're proud to be different," states Vek towards the end of his allocated three minutes (bless the radio edit), but it's probably for the best, right now, that he's not too different from credible, established acts. In time Vek will no doubt find his own voice, but for now 'If You Want' is a safe but worthy introduction to a talent that may soon blossom. Laconic-sounding b-side 'A Little Word In Your Ear' (more Beck than electronica) and an energetic Playgroup dub of the title track round off a neat package.
