Hoggboy

Ugh

Label:

mclarke by Michael Clarke June 22nd, 2001

It finally seems that the guitar world are beginning to realise what it actually takes to create a great record (or song for that matter). No Radiohead it doesn’t necessarily mean spending 370-odd days recording one song, no it doesn’t mean you have to invent a new genre or break down all barriers. All it takes it to blend together the influence of the great rock bands off the past and just create exciting simple pop songs, songs that may well make people think that this music cannot have been created. Only it has a lot in the past, just modern music seem to have forgotton and are lead into thinking production is the essential part of making a record. Finally, however, we can see a host of bands appearing who can notice this, lead by The Strokes. Nothing original, no new barriers just drop dead gorgeous rock’n’roll songs. It seems this Sheffield based band, Hoggboy, have also noticed it and are making it heard.

Formed at the back end of 2000, by Seafruit side man Tom Hogg, the band have made considerable progress to say that you could actually count their number of gigs on both your hands. Still unsigned but have record countries running around the country after them as they have used their policy of not letting the industry know any dates. Still that didn’t stop Steve Lamacq from seeing them play in Manchester last month and raving “I went to see them and my jaw just hit the floor" when he featured them on a solo slot on The Session Unsigned.

‘Ugh’ is a sweet, arrogant, sleazy rock’n’roll tune. Okay lead singer Tom Hogg tries too-hard to sound American, but it really is hard to fault this outstanding song. The verse to this tune is one which is catchy enough to be an S Club 7 single and where Coldplay and Travis sing about love, Hoggboy opt for the more dirty approach “when she sat down on my big couch with her lipstick on and I was in her yeah!” though it could almost mean something else. Until the chorus erupts onto you which can only be described as a chorus of orgasmic noise of some sort of cheap orgy. And the song ends on 2 and a half minutes with the sound of two people coming down after reaching sexual pleasure. A listen to the song will almost make you feel the same.

I know its only rock’n’roll. But you will sure as hell like it.
