Valve

Station EP

Label: Pleasure Release Date: 09/07/2001

jlawrence by Jon Lawrence July 10th, 2001

Knowing absoloutly nothing about Valve other than the much coverted (yeah, right) phrase of 'next big thing', i assumed they'd be a nice guitar based band, maybe something a little different?

But no, Valve are nothing but Coldplay wannabes, even the vocalist's dulcate tones nod directly at a sceond rate Chris Martin, and the entire EP, give or take a few nice guitar workouts, is bland to the verge of crying.

Track one, 'Euston' screams tedium, there is no other way to describe it than dull guitar music, the vocals can't even save this one. It starts nowhere, and goes nowhere. Track two, 'Station' is equally as lame, the traditional indie sound just cruelly played to its weakest and dullest areas, without even a hint of reinvention.

Final track 'Beauty/Decay' is Valve's only salvation, quite a dramatic ending of a crescendo of lush guitar sounds rescues this infinitely disappointing debut.

Valve are joining the indie bandwagon a touch too late, but if they must go about things in this manner, it would be quite interesting to hear something remotely good from them. Sorry.
