In/Humanity

The Great American Teenage Suicide Rebellion 92-98

Label: Prank Release Date: 19/01/2001

DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking January 19th, 2001

This is the near discography of South Carolina’s In/Humanity and contains 42 noisy, crashing blasts of thrash-core goodness, although guitarist Chris Bickel reckons there’re only 3 or 4 decent ones. “We were an absolutely horrible band but that never stopped us from trying our damnedest to enlighten the community with our punk rock”.

However, those of you who think hardcore thrash is all about making as much noise as possible can jolly well think again. Just as Anal C**t’s ear aching debut ‘Morbid Florist’ kept the listener interested through weird tempos & noises [including a cover of EMF’s ‘Unbelievable’] so In/Humanity sought to incorporate all kinds of strange sounds & effects into their distorted & warped psyche.

Such as ‘If It’s Wrong It’s Real’ which contains a slow haunting Neurosis-esque strings refain & the bleepy ‘Burn It To The Ground’ –more ear-friendly than *Canvas *anyway.

Says Bickel, “We did a couple of things before anyone else… and some of the things we did no-one would ever want to repeat”. In fact every wall of noise that rips through my speakers seems more experimental than the last. Even the hefty booklet that accompanies this makes interesting reading. There are also some pretty humourous explanations about the songs such as their incompetence at how little people in the UK & Europe know about the American Emo-violence underground! There’s also some cool quotes after every song such as, “Everyone has the right to be stupid, but some people abuse the privelege”.

Despite Bickel’s modesty this, in my book, is perhaps one of the best hardcore-thrash albums released and with some of the coolest song titles too – “Too Drunk To Molotov”, “We’re Sick of Music & We Hate Each Other”, “Dork Side of the Farce” etc… Contact: prankrec@mindspring.com
