Messer Chups

Crazy Price

Label: Ipecac Release Date: 24/10/2005

11677
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver November 7th, 2005

The hand of Mike Patton leaves an indelible mark wherever it lands: Messer Chups may hail from the epic expanse of Russia – or Germany, the press release is a little confusing – but their sound is as indebted to the madcap metal histrionics of Fantomas as it is the b-movie horror-cum-sci-fi flicks that they plunder their vocal samples from. When said utterances are mixed with pulsing electronica that sporadically breaks into Jan and Dean surf rock, the effect is akin to being tickled while being fed motor oil: Hahaha… stop it… hahaha… ergh that’s gross… hahaha… I’m gonna…!blergh!… all over my shoes…

That Crazy Price – a 16-track mindfuck of significant malevolence – comes to us courtesy of Patton's Ipecac is therefore as big of a surprise as finding those mince pies you left for Santa consumed come Christmas morning and your dad’s gob all covered in crumbs. It squelches and bleeps, twangs and crunches in just about all the right places, and those samples – if they’re samples, I'm no movie expert – add devilish spice to some already hot rockin’ action. Song titles hint further at the tomfoolery to follow the employing of the play button: ‘Bing Bang Bang Bong Kong’ and ‘Monkey Safari’ sound great, right? Right you are. Defiantly retro, those splatterings of keyboard glitch aside, Crazy Price is fun, simple as: you’ll dance, you’ll swing, you’ll scream.

And you will press rewind and do it all over.
