Jenny

Label: 20 20 Recordings Release Date: 15/09/2003

And so the US indie circuit's fascination with all things 1979 to 1988 continues, as by the end of the first verse of 'Jenny', we've had the obligatory Cure guitar hook, XTC bass riff, and David Byrne soundalike frontman while Kim Deal hums 'Echo Beach' in the background, and yet, it's surprisingly good.

Admittedly, it doesn't make your arteries go "POP!" like last single 'Somewhere Across Forever' did and the chorus of "Jenny's coming after you..ruu..hu...hu...hun" (or something like that) strangely makes me hum Bing and Bowie's 'Little Drummer Boy' ("Come they told me, rum...per...pum...pum"), which, thankfully, Amanda Tannen's saccharine coated coo makes you just want to do......!!! (Wet patch not included.)

Whether or not Stellastarr* have the staying power to match the hype is inconclusive at this stage, but for now this will do nicely, even if the elongated squelch of 'Homeland' on this CD makes the SKIP button seems almost godlike in comparison.
