An Evening With Piney
An Evening With Piney
rubbafish by Colin Weston December 26th, 2004
Each year there is a musical revelation for many fans. For some of you it may be Razorlight, for others it may be The Libertines and for a good many it will probably just be Pete Doherty. For this reviewer though the real talent that shone out was a multi-talented eccentric young lady from Kansas currently residing in London. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Angela Penhaligon, aka Piney Gir.

Her debut album on Truck Records, 'Peekahokahoo', has been receiving plaudits left, right and centre so we thought we would discuss the things that matter to her such as collaborations, Xmas celebrations and soymilk!

Been an eventful year hasn't it?

Oh dear me, yes!

What has been the highlight of it so far?

It's all gone by so fast it's hard to pick a moment. I guess when my album was actually finished and I had it in my hand, the finished thing, it was the most amazing feeling.

What are your plans for Xmas and the New Year?

It always makes me a little bit homesick around the holidays, I don't know what I'll do really. Have a vegetarian roast dinner for one and curl up with my Audrey Hepburn box set. For New Year I've not got any plans, but hopefully whatever I do will involve champagne, Bellinis are divine.

How many times were you actually performing at Truck this year in various guises?

Lemme see... Piney Gir, The Schla La Las, The Orff Orchestra, and with Trademark, I think that's it.

How did Simple Kid become involved with your album?

We used to work together at Mute so that's how we knew each other. We were sort of having this jokey e-mail conversation about doing a duet, so we did. I don't think he knew I meant it when I said it, but when I sent him the track he was happy to do it.

It is at this point I decide to ask questions related to the song titles of her album.

Is it hard to be Piney the solo artist, the Schla and all your other solo projects as well as being the office working 'Girl'?

Well I do Piney because I have to, because she lives inside me and is always screaming to get out, I'd go crazy if I suppressed her, she needs to be the centre of attention. It can be intense nurturing Piney, because it's all about looking inside and you can get lost in your own mind. The Schlas offers a relief from that really, we are just a bunch of girls, we are all friends and we have a laugh, it's so refreshing, I love those ladies! The other projects I do are just for fun and I don't invest a lot of time and effort in them, I guess a bit like hobbies, if they stopped being fun I wouldn't do them. I do still have a day job as pop isn't exactly paying the bills, but I am very lucky to have a job I very much enjoy and they are so supportive of my music, if ever pop did start paying the bills I'd be sad to leave my job.

What is your favourite 'Creature'?

I love animals so I can't really pick a favourite, but I absolutely LOVE miniature animals, they are so small and perfectly formed; tiny dogs, pygmy marmosets, shrews... oh and I love baby animals, all of them. Aw I want a little cuddly critter of my own, but I'm not home enough to nurture one. I never get broody, but I would love a pet.

Who in your perfect world would you like to 'K-I-S-S-I-N-G'?

Mister Peanut! He's so dapper and seems like he'd be a real gentleman.

Do you consider yourself as a 'Jezabel'??

Oh no! I hope not. I guess the more in this business I get the more 'Jezabels' I see and it's so sad.

What're your band tips for 2005?

Psapp! That album is amazing and Galia has such a great voice.

Anything else you would like to share with the world?

I know that Starbucks is bad and corporate and nasty, but as a vegan there aren't many places to get soymilk in your coffee. So with that fun fact outta the way you've so got to try an iced-soy-gingerbread-latte, oh my god, transcendently good (I'm an addict)!
