Slow Club's Top 10 Angsty Anthems
Slow Club's Top 10 Angsty Anthems
JoeDiddly by Luke Slater July 30th, 2009

For many, there's nothing better than wallowing in self-pity with a record which matches your mood. Art, literature and music go together with angst. That's how it is. It can be your only friend and your best friend. Heaven knows we all experience a bit of angst now and then. Sheffield two-piece pop-folkers certainly do and to celebrate (or commiserate...) this fact, they compiled their Top 10 anthems of angst, or Top 10 Angsty Anthems as we are calling this feature...

As chosen by Rebecca:

1. My Chemical Romance - 'I'm Not OK'

I am basing this pretty much on what I would be listening to when I was 15 in my bedroom writing in my notebook about how no body understands me. But I honestly think this is a serious TUNE. It would be the opening to a film about my angsty life.

2. My Chemical Romance - 'Welcome To The Black Parade'

This would close the film.

3. Bob Dylan - 'It Ain’t Me Babe'

OB-SESSED with this song. Not sure if it is angsty? If I was the lady he is singing to, I would be pretty ANGSTY about it.

4. DJ JJ Pistolet - 'Hooked Up On Us'

Saddest song ever.

5. Diane Cluck - 'Yr Million Sweetnesses'

I might be wrong, but I think this song is full of angst and annoyance at not being interested in any of the nice things around her? I don't know, but sometimes I feel like this, a lot. and it makes me feel ANGSTY!!! ?

As chosen by Charles:

6. The Shins - 'Know Your Onion'

I love reading James Mercers lyrics but when you listen to the songs they are pretty difficult to make out. There is a line in this song which I think is pretty fitting. ' When they are parking their cars on your chest you've still got a view of a summer sky'. I could be wrong but that’s what I thought it meant.

7. The Wave Pictures - 'Friday Night In Loughborough'

I guess this is the story of small town life. "I wish I didn't have to hang out here anymore". It’s a lot more about the performance than anything else for me in this song.

8. Daniel Johnston - 'Love Wheel'

From what I understand about Daniel Johnston's material, unrequited love is a theme that rarely disappears. This is what I would call angst.

9. Bright Eyes - 'Take It Easy'

Again I am sure the words are angsty. I just like the way it sounds.

10. Papa Roach - 'Last Resort'

Definite angst.
